Florida Vacation Guide

Any recommendations for an affordable vacation in Florida, the Gulf Coast?

We moved from Miami to Houston a few years ago and I would find a spa on the Gulf Coast somewhere midway between these two places to meet with the family. Does anyone have any recommendations for a complex economic / hotel / rental preference on the beach somewhere near the pan handle? We have seen in Destin, which seems a bit expensive. Any recommendation would be appreciated.
