Renting a house is a great affordable option for a vacation, especially if you have a large family, or traveling with a large group of friends. Just to check online and you will see that you can rent a nice apartment or house in the best parts of Manhattan for a week for $ 500/person (or less). Try to find a hotel room for that price! And staying in someone's home means you have the added advantage of more space (living room, kitchen, sometimes a garden, balcony or patio), something to pay very expensive hotels in major cities. Here are some ideas to make your vacation even more affordable.

1. Travel off-season. I understand that you do not want to be on a beach during a hurricane or snowstorm, but even going a bit off peak hours can save enough money. In the French Riviera, for example, you can find prices almost half in October than they were in August. The weather is still great, and as an added benefit, the crowds are gone, and the locals are less stressed. Prices in restaurants and shops also tend to decrease once the tourist season is over.

2. Traveling to places where their currency is strong. A few years ago, the U.S. dollar was a long way in Sweden. No longer: it's worth today almost half of what it was in 2002. Do your research and compare rates. Some very areas to spend their vacations where the dollar is still strong (September 2008) are: Argentina, South Africa, Vietnam and the worldwide eco-favorite, Costa Rica.

3. Looking for last minute deals. If you are flexible with their time and can travel short term rentals Last Minute Vacations can be good business. I just did a quick Internet search and found a waterfront mansion in the Florida Keys for less $ 1,000 per week at the normal rate.

4. Rent direct from owners when possible. Since management companies charge landlords to rent their properties of (and the owner has to recoup that cost, most often resulting in higher rental rates) can get a cheaper rate to rent direct from owners. I think it's good to have the opportunity to speak to the person who actually owns the house, too.

5. Look for places where the inventory exceeds demand. The rise of building in recent years, combined with a slowing housing market and economy has led to a lot of inventory, and the possibility of negotiate a lower rate. Most landlords prefer to rent your vacation away from home a bit cheaper than in all. In the U.S., Florida is the undisputed leader when dealing with the most holiday homes, followed by California and New York.
