Taking Florida fishing to the extreme

April 5th, 2007 by Pearl

Some people’s idea of fishing is to sit back in a rowboat on a still lake, drop a light line into the water, and wile away a lazy day. Others see fishing as a contact sport, man versus underwater beast, as they battle for hours with the big one, one that they hope will not turn into a story of the one that got away. For those extreme fishermen, a day of deep sea fishing on a charter boat off the Florida Keys is a dream come true.

Florida is home to over 250 different species of freshwater fish and more than 100 saltwater species. While catching a fish is always an accomplishment for the angler, there’s something so special, challenging and exciting about going out into the sea and landing a monster.

If you are fortunate to own a huge yacht, you can assemble your crew, gather all of your gear, check the local fishing reports and the tide charts, and set sail for your private fisherman’s paradise. Of course, if you’re not an expert in this special field, you might not have much luck.

For the fishing adventure of a lifetime, it might be best to seek professional help and sail out into the sea aboard a charter boat. Bait and tackle are supplied, and so is the proper fishing license. With an experienced captain and crew, seasoned seafarers who know the reefs and wrecks, you will be taken to the sweetest fishing spots in the area, and your half-day or full-day quest is sure to be a success.

Deep sea fishing is a highly specialized sport. Before you book a charter, you must be clear about where you want to fish and what you want to catch. With dozens of charter boats departing from Marathon, Islamorada and Key West, you shouldn’t have much trouble selecting one to suit your interests. And with warm waters teaming with sailfish, tuna, tarpon and other trophy fish, chances are great that you’ll go home with wonderful memories of the catch of the day.
