September is here, you know what that means? No, I'm talking about back to school shopping. No, I'm talking about taking the last vacation summer. I'm talking about hurricanes! According to the AOML, August, September and October are the peak months of hurricane activity in the Atlantic. The AOML has predicted that 2008 will be a more than average year. But even if you decide to ignore the predictions, remember that a single hurricane is all it takes to endanger your family or depriving of their investments.

Are you ready? Think you do not have to worry about hurricanes? Read and find out!

Who affected by hurricanes? not have to live in Florida or New Orleans to be affected by the hurricanes. Did you know that in 1938 there was a hurricane that hit in the Northeast, which left 600 dead? And we have no direct impact from a hurricane to suffer tremendous damage. Storm systems caused by hurricanes often cause power outages, flooding and winds for navigation states. Do not assume you will not be affected. These tips will prepare you for other disasters, well, so read on.

Do you have adequate insurance coverage? When was the last time you reviewed your policies or updated with your insurance company or agent? It might be worth your time to do this in the next couple of weeks. While you're there, you also should inquire about umbrella coverage if you do not already have. As its name implies, this is a general use policy that provides additional protection beyond its current policies. This is a relatively inexpensive insurance that can make a big difference if you have to file a claim (see Tell Me, TMA below for more information).

Do you have an evacuation plan well thought out? You may not use a comprehensive plan created by someone else. Customize yours to meet your needs. Here are some things to consider:

  • Exit Strategy: Ensure that all Everyone knows the quickest way to leave the house in case of fire or other natural disaster. The second really counts!
  • Venue: Having agreed on a meeting place. The faster you can do a recount, can move faster to locate anyone who does not understand. They have 2 locations meeting place – one right outside your home (sidewalk or driveway) and another outside your property (home of a friend, library or school)
  • Contact person: Indicate a person to be the "caller". If separated from his family, and can not get one of those places and have a person to be the communicator between the groups to save confusion and missed calls. Make sure everyone knows the telephone number of the contact person!

You know how to prepare for a storm? Here are some other general tips for you to think. If a storm is forecast, make sure:

  • Have a full tank of gas. Gas stations can not pump gas if the power is.
  • Secure your outdoor items free to not turn on the air and injure you or someone else.
  • Fill your kit for disaster. In a storm seriously, this could be well worth the effort. Include drinking water (in the perishables at least one gallon of drinking water per person per day), food (canned, dried and others that do not require cooking, water or special preparation – and do not forget a manual can opener), the prescriptions and medicines (three days' supply recommended) first aid kit, flashlights, lanterns battery power, and AM / FM radio, plus spare batteries.
  • Prepare a bag of pets. Do not forget your petsl – who need food, water, medicine, and straps.

I certainly hope that the peak hurricane season just "blow for us" without incident, but it never hurts to be prepared for whatever the future.
