During a recent vacation in the Florida Keys, I decided to hire a guide and go fishing for the day. We had gone the day before diving in the Park John Pennekamp State the water was crystal clear from the lack of rain and I wanted to take photos of Key West.
Water clarity attracted me to try fishing for shad before heading to the festival in the Duval Street in Key West. The ship's captain picked me up at the dock of the Waterfront Lodge was around 7:30 in the morning on a 17 'Maverick, powered by a 90HP Yamaha.
When we reached our fishing destination our intention was to live fish, crabs and shad allocation of view but it was still early for the shad bite so we moved a little on the coast for Bonefish.
The Maverick was fishing I had a casting platform forward and put there was only a slight chop on the water, I thought give it a try. Now, most people are not as concerned about standing on a platform two feet above from the deck of a boat measuring just 18 "x 18", but for a middle-aged man carrying some extra kilos, was a small challenge. After only a few minutes on the platform I felt confidence and extra height gave me a better view of the fish.
When we moved into deeper waters to chase the shad we found the activity immediately. The first shad was cast to one fish, the cast was OK but not perfect and shad below. The next fish I saw moved through the floor so fast that not even think I saw my bait, what can you do?
Shortly after that, a pod of 10-15 shad came swimming toward us. My first cast was a little short, as the fish moves around the ship, he staggered and was about to take another model. The guide shouted, "Pick fish and cast to it, but there were so many and my heart beat so fast that I have just quality in the center of the pod just to see swimming around.
Shortly after a reckless sailor climbed into us and it was time to move well, just a short boat ride later and had moved to a different floor.
The next plane looked just as promising as the first, because we saw fish immediately. Then came my shot, threw the live crab a fish of about 50-75 meters ahead. The shad was the bait and inhalation. As the guide advises, I waited for the line tense up and lifted the tip of cane. The fish jumped sevenfold in the surface plane before reaching deeper water for the rest of the fight which lasted about twenty minutes.
The Guide estimated that the fish weighed about 45 pounds. Tarpon always look bigger in the water and I would have thought that was closer to 60 pounds, but he was the expert.
Tarpon I caught a few over the years and many more online, including a spring sea fish that could have gone more than 150 pounds, as live bait, trolling for kingfish, but this was my first time in the crystal clear waters of Key Largo and one I will remember for years to come.
