One of the things I like about living in Florida is that it is a great place for a vacation, even if you live here. It seems that no matter where you live, coast east, west coast, in the Florida Panhandle or South just a couple of hours drive in any direction and can be somewhere that is not like home so you feel you've really left it all. The Panhandle is commonly known as the Redneck Riviera with its emerald waters and white sand beaches. The west coast is a great place to go "island to island, with Sanibel, Lovers Key and all the other little places available there. The east coast is ideal for surfing, small wave capital here in our own history and Cocoa Beach, St. Augustine, on the east coast of Florida, is the oldest city in the nation, but if you really want to feel like you has gone south. South Florida is truly a tropical location, the tropics really begin in South Central Florida and becomes more lush and green, the more south.
We have our own little tropical paradise known as the Florida Keys. Keys are composed of many small islands and island chains and laying down on the tip of Florida as found in the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. Key Largo is the beginning and felt that the first key. Key Largo is the one made famous by the movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall and song. The waters around the Keys are warm and crystal clear This attracts many divers and swimmers paid to Key Largo with the popular nickname of the "Diving Capital of the World."
Islamorada is the most popular around the corner on down the chain of islands. Islamorada is actually made up of six different islands and has a reputation to be the fishing capital of the world. They have a fleet of great skill recreational fishing captains will be more than happy to go out with you for a day to see what's biting. Islamorada is also famous for a place called Robbie's Marina this is the place where they sell buckets of bait for feeding swarms of tarpon that hang around docks. It's so fun to feed them, I've done. Islamorada is also famous for the opportunities to swim with dolphins. They also have a history of diving Museum hence it is quite interesting.
Another place not to be missed is John Pennekamp State Park. They are known as the ideal place for diving and snorkeling and are the only living coral reef in the continental United States. More than a million people from around the world to enjoy the water, trails and camping facilities offered by the park. They also have the "Cristo de las Aguas", a people bronze statue of 19 meters diving all, some even diving to touch the outstretched hands.
Marathon is considered by many as the "middle" of the Keys and place of the famous 7-mile bridge. Marathon is also a major sport fishing destination, is also popular for spearfishing and have opened the season lobster during the year, Marathon is a great place to try to catch a few.
Big Pine Key is a short distance beyond the famous Seven Mile Bridge, where the Keys need to turn the gentle west and is considered the beginning of the "Lower Keys. This is the place where you can come to relax a little less crowded and its more natural that some of the other keys. Probably one of the largest is about Big Pine Key is the National Key Deer Refuge, home to the lovely Key Deer, the smallest of the white Virginia-tailed deer, which are endangered and therefore protected by the federal government. Bahia Honda State Park is another draw to the area. You can picnic, take a dip, the reef diving, snorkeling the shallow waters or simply relax on the beach Sandspur voted # 7 on the Travel Channel Top 10 Beaches in Florida.
Key West is considered by some as the crown jewel of the Keys, but do not think that is really quite good considering its all good. Key West, however, is THE place to party in the Keys. Duval Street is famous for its bars and history, Mallory Square is famous as a place to enjoy the making sun and after-party that occurs every night. Street vendors and artists are something worth seeing. Every year around Halloween, Key West hosts a party Fantasyfest where people dress up and dance in the streets, in their nature.
The keys are a great place to get married, have a honeymoon or a family reunion. You can dive, snorkel, fish or just lie on a beach and relax in any place, anywhere in the Keys. You can dance and party the night one way, shopping at one of the unique, quaint shops, or a delicious meal at one of the outdoor cafes all while enjoying a drink flavored with tropical fruit. On this day people on vacation close to home that Floridians are truly blessed to have a beautiful Caribbean style place to come visit without leaving 'home'.
