The statistics on homeschooling are quite surprising.

The state of Florida alone had over 56,000 learning at home in 2007 compared to 10,039 in school year 1991-92.

There are controversial aspects of home education. Many towns and cities in Florida and throughout the country complain of loss of funds per student. Educators point to the "brain drain" with some of the richest and articulate parents no longer participate in public education. Others if parents challenge a whole have the ability to teach. And social scientists question whether the school environment prepares children home adequately by the diversity of democratic life or properly socialized for U.S. mainstream.

However, according A study at the University of Florida for home schooled children are not much to gain. The study found students in the home were generally more patient and less competitive. They tend to present to others, do not fight much. And the students at home were much more likely to change addresses and phone numbers.

For now, home schooling is growing, and no longer limited to a band that may never have believed in the idea of public education. People all political and social strata are discovering the benefits of homeschooling.

Of course, home schooling is not for all families. The need for at least one parent be home to the concept of work that would eliminate the opportunity for many mothers and fathers who work outside the home. And there is certainly a huge amount of resources for homeschooling to work well.

But the advantages are numerous, including the possibility that the family not being tied to the summer holiday or winter holiday. And off season holidays are generally less expensive, so is the cost savings and flexibility incorporated into the holiday.

We had several families from the school to stay home in our rental vacation home and condo vacation rental Sanibel for a week to several months. Those who stayed for long periods were able to do so parents working from home. But both groups wrote again to say how the experience was wonderful. In some cases the experience was so good that the families decided to make their Sanibel home, and bought their properties.

Sanibel is a small community and family education at home, it's easy to meet other students in the home that can join a play group or study group.

In addition, many organizations on the island that have classes, projects and courses that are available all year on weekdays and weekends. The learning which takes place at these meetings will become a unit of study of great interest to the student and parents.

And, of course, for students at home or any visiting the island, the environment provides for spontaneous and natural learning. Children and adults explore Sanibel, guaranteed to find a great deal discoveries on a daily basis.
