At the top of the books I mentioned specifically on Sanibel Island, or using the island for his backdrop.

Because have a great holiday read is de rigueur, I delight in finding the right book when on vacation on the island.

One of these new, based on the history of Florida is a land Remembered by Patrick Smith. I have read this publication, participation for several years and was so enamored of the story I bought copies for our Sanibel vacation rental properties. Every time we visit, I have to replenish the supply, the Tenants obviously find the story so compelling that it sometimes takes the book with them.

And I do not blame them. There is nothing more frustrating than through reading a great book on vacation that does not belong to you! And Sanibel is a wonderful place to lose yourself in a wonderful reading. It's hard to let go.

In this bestseller, the author tells the story of three generations of the MacIveys, a farmer's family in Florida that the battle of the difficulties of the border to get up of a land-poor Cracker life to wealth and position of real estate tycoons.

The story begins in 1858, when Tobias MacIvey arrives in the Florida wilderness to start a new life with his wife and infant son, and ends two generations later with Solomon MacIvey, which reports that the land has been exploited far beyond human need.

The sweeping story that emerges is a rich and eventful history of Florida with a memorable cast of crunchy cookies indomitable fighting wild animals, thieves, Confederate deserters, mosquitoes, starvation, hurricanes, and freezes to carve a kingdom of a swamp. However, his most formidable adversary turns out to be greed, and ultimately their own. Love and tenderness are also in this case: the hopes and passions each new generation, friendships with the persecuted blacks and Indians, and respect for the land and its wildlife.

A Land Remembered was winner of the Florida Historical Society Tebeau Prize as the most Outstanding Florida historical novel. Buy the book. Take it to the beach. Read it in the pool. Take it home again. It's an incredible story and helps put in a completely Sanibel new.

The ordinary denizens of a small Southern town become natural subjects for filmmaker Errol Morris in Vernon, Florida, a hypnotically bizarre character study. Based on the evidence of the film, this small humid town in the panhandle is home to a disproportionately high percentage of oddballs. (On the other hand, Morris's other work suggests that poking a camera anywhere uncovers a common vein of w...

John Candy's first leading role was in this 1985 film by Carl Reiner, in which the comic actor played a stressed-out air traffic controller who takes his family on a Florida vacation and has to deal with arrogant, rich jerks. Candy is good in what is almost a straight part (albeit with some jokes), and Reiner keeps the tone in check so his star has an opportunity to show more than one dimension. -...
